OBJECTIVES:
- Identify who each of these women is and what each is known for.
- Assess the impact each had in the field for which she is known.
- Provide one or more reasons as to why each of them is little known despite their significant achievements
OBJECTIVES:
This lesson is intended to introduce to students three Asian American women who led extraordinary lives, but despite their accomplishments, they remain virtually unknown to most Americans. The lesson only touches the surface of their lives. With that knowledge, though, students can learn a great deal about the times they lived in, the fields in which they worked, and the impact they left on others. The lesson and its resources leave it up to the teacher to encourage students to dig more deeply into the experiences of Anna May Wong, an acclaimed film actress; Dr. Mabel Ping Hua Lee, an activist for women’s suffrage; and Grace Lee Boggs, an advocate for civil rights. In this introductory lesson, students will find purpose and meaning that can be drawn from each of their lives and how purpose and meaning can be used to inspire all Americans.
The “Resources” section at the end of the lesson has links to more lesson plans that can be used for further study of each of these extraordinary women.
Why is it that women and Asian women in particular are overlooked in their fields and in American history?
