TOPIC:

OBJECTIVES

  • Name the main artist/creator of the illustrations used in Walt Disney’s animated film, Bambi.
  • Explain how discrimination played a role in the lack of acknowledgement of Tyrus Wong’s contributions to Bambi.
  • Describe how he achieved recognition for his art well beyond that as an illustrator during his long and distinguished career.

INTRODUCTION

This lesson covers the many challenges that Tyrus and his father endured along his journey to becoming one of America’s pre-eminent artists, impacting animation history and American culture for generations to come. From a “Paper Boy” who had to be separated from his only family member, his father, for many years, Tyrus Wong’s story of immigration through Angel Island is a good case study of how racism and bias affected not only the unfair practices during immigration processing, but also later during Tyrus’ career.

Themes include immigration, bias and stereotypes and Asian American history.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

  • How does race play a role in limiting one’s potential to succeed or to achieve recognition for one’s accomplishments?
